Stop and Stare
Twenty years ago, psychologist Arthur Aron discovered that four minutes of looking into each other's eyes can bring people closer. Using this discovery, Amnesty International decided to carry out a simple experiment where refugees and Europeans sat opposite each other and looked into each other's eyes.
The experiment participants were ordinary people. The situations were not staged
The people sitting opposite each other had not known each other before and saw each other for the first time during the experiment. What is important, the refugees mostly came from Syria and had not been living in Europe for longer than a year.
Task - Questions
1) Do you think that society doesn't care about refugees because they have no personal connection or link to them? (Explain your answer)
2) Do you think if more people carried out the stop and stare experiment they would care about the refugee crisis? (Why do you think this? )
Two Billion Miles

They fled their homes and made journeys through Europe to escape civil war, poverty and the misery of refugee camps.
Migrants who applied for asylum in Europe have collectively travelled more than two billion miles; a conservative estimate based on the shortest over-land routes to European countries from their countries of origin. These 727,085 people travelled an average of 2,750 miles each.
